Three-port inert atmosphere glovebox
Innovative Technologies PureLab HE
Argon-filled glovebox with large and small antechambers; -40 ° freezer; < 1 ppm O2 and < 1 ppm H2O. This enables us to handle and store sentitive materials.
Automated reaction sampling equipment
Mettler Toledo EasySampler
Apparatus capable of automated reaction sampling (and sample quenching) at specified timepoints
Electrochemistry apparatus
Metrohm PGSTAT204
Potentiostat and associated electrodes for electrochemical studies
Microwave Synthesis Apparatus
Biotage
Equipment for carrying out reactions under microwave irradiation at scales from ca. 2 to 20 mL.
NMR Spectroscopy
Various Bruker Instruments
Four instruments with 400 - 600 MHz 1H observe frequencies, various multinuclear capabilities, and autosamplers. Instruments can be used by researchers in open access mode, and full training is given by the technician (Mr Craig Irving) when embarking on research at Strathclyde. All except the AV3-400 can be booked for longer periods for manual work, and feature variable temperature units. The AV3-400 is equipped with a liquid N2 cryoprobe. The facility is managed by Dr John Parkinson.
Single Crystal X-Ray Diffraction
Rigaku Synergi with Cu Source / Oxford Gemini with Mo Source
Each instrument has a cryostream apparatus to enable data collection at 100 K. The facility is managed by Dr Alan Kennedy.
Mass Spectrometry
Various Instruments
Instruments are available for (e.g.) GC-MS/EI, ACPI/ESI-MS, MALDI, and LC-MS, as well as a TLC plate reader. Full training is given by the technical staff when starting a research position at Strathclyde. Trained researchers are permitted to use the equipment 'hands-on'. Less frequent users can submit samples to the service for analysis. The facility is managed by Dr Graeme Anderson and Dr Jessica Bame.
Gas Chromatography
Agilent GC-FID
An Agilent GC instrument with FID detection is available for the resolution and accurate quantification of the components of samples submitted for analysis.
UV/Visible Spectroscopy
Agilent/Varian Cary 50
UV/visible spectrometer with peltier-controlled variable temperature cell holder available for open access use. The associated software allows the analysis of data and the automated collection of kinetic data.
Elemental Analysis
Exeter Analytical CE440
An elemental analysis service is available, which we use to ascertain the identity and purity of new organometallic complexes. Samples are submitted to the technician for analysis.
Dry Solvent Dispenser
Innovative Technologies PureSolv
This dispenses dry solvents (< 10 ppm H2O); THF, PhMe, Et2O, hexane, and DCM are available. The water content of each solvent is checked by regular Karl-Fischer analysis. This facility is managed by Mr Frank McGeoch.
Archie-WEST High Performance Computer
> 2500 CPU cores; Lenovo nodes with 40 CPU cores/192 GB RAM or 80 CPU cores/3TB RAM
Our HPC facility is managed centrally, and provides access to significant computing resource to support a range of computationally-intensive research activities across the University.
